The Largest Cyclospora Outbreak Is Over. The Missing Answer Still Matters. — The American Take

Federal health officials say the largest cyclospora outbreak in U.S. history is over. Nearly 13,000 reported cases were tied to the multistate outbreak, and the FDA says the recalled iceberg lettuce connected to it is no longer on the market.

That is the good news. The unresolved question is how the contamination happened on such a large scale. Cyclospora is a parasite associated with food or water contaminated by human waste, and investigators have not yet identified the precise point where the food supply failed.

Food-safety stories can feel remote until they reach a family kitchen. The system depends on layers of prevention: clean water, safe agricultural practices, processing controls, inspections, traceability and rapid communication when something goes wrong. A failure at any one layer can spread through a national distribution network quickly.

The outbreak also exposes the limits of a recall after the fact. Removing contaminated products matters, but a system that cannot explain how contamination occurred has not fully learned the lesson. The objective should be to make the next outbreak less likely, not simply to close the file on the last one.

Consumers do not need panic. They do deserve accountability and a clear explanation once investigators know more. “The outbreak is over” is a relief. “We know why it happened and fixed the vulnerability” would be better.
