VIDEO: AOC and Mamdani Caught on Camera Laughing as Victims’ Names Read at 9/11 Memorial

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are facing criticism after cameras showed them smiling and appearing to laugh during the 25th-anniversary ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan.

The moment occurred while relatives and participants were reading the names of people killed in the 2001 attacks. A television feed cut from an emotional mourner to Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani speaking to one another and appearing to share a moment of laughter.

The visual is real, and so is the timing. What the footage does not establish is what they were discussing. Their conversation was inaudible, and there is no evidence in the available video showing that they were laughing at the victims, their families or the names being read.

Conservative politicians and commentators called the behavior inappropriate at Ground Zero during such a solemn event. Michael Ragusa, who has worked in former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s security detail, pushed back and said the camera captured a greeting out of context. Mamdani was also shown behaving solemnly at other moments of the ceremony.

Context does not erase the political impact of the image. Public officials know conduct at a national memorial carries symbolic weight. The fair conclusion is narrow but clear: they were caught laughing while victims’ names were being read. The available evidence does not tell us what was funny.
