America and Mexico Are Racing Toward a Trade Deal Before the Midterms — The American Take

U.S. and Mexican officials are working toward a bilateral trade agreement before the November midterms, according to Reuters. The talks involve tariffs, automotive rules and concerns about Chinese investment, all inside one of America’s most important economic relationships.

Mexico sends more than 80% of its exports to the United States. That degree of integration means trade policy is not just about imports and exports in the abstract. It affects factories, farms, auto suppliers, border communities and consumer prices on both sides of the line.

The political calendar creates pressure for a quick result. An interim agreement can give both governments a concrete accomplishment before voters go to the polls. The danger is that a rushed deal can postpone difficult questions rather than resolve them.

The central U.S. interest should be straightforward: preserve the benefits of North American production while preventing trade rules from becoming a back door for strategic dependence on China. That requires enforcement, transparent rules of origin and enough predictability for companies to make long-term investments.

A deal before November could be useful if it improves those fundamentals. It would be less useful if it is designed mainly for a press conference. North American trade is too important to be judged by the speed of the announcement.
