Democrats Hate Trump's Ads. DHS Has Already Aired $12 Million Worth.

Nearly $12 million of ads featuring the president have aired, and Washington is losing its mind. The fight is over who pays, and who is being persuaded.

Nearly $12 million of ads featuring President Trump have already aired, and Washington is losing its mind. That is the point worth sitting with: Democrats are not upset that nobody is watching. They are upset because people are.

What Is on the Record

The Department of Homeland Security has a $20 million contract for the campaign. AdImpact tracking shows nearly $12 million has aired across four ads that began running in late September, according to the AP. The White House calls them public service announcements. Trump calls them "positive promotion for our Great U.S.A."

Where the Money Came From

According to OPB, the $20 million came from funds in the One Big Beautiful Bill that were originally designated for Customs and Border Protection, and Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought moved the money on September 19. OPB reported that more than $2.5 million was spent on three ads in the first week alone. By October 6, the AdImpact figure had climbed to nearly $12 million.

What the Ads Look Like

OPB described one recent spot as black-and-white footage that resembles Trump's 2024 campaign material, showing him in a hallway warning of a "final battle" against his adversaries before he turns to face the camera. Democrats will say that looks like a campaign ad. Fair enough. It also looks like a president making his case to the country, and making that case is the job.

What Democrats and the Legal Experts Say

Democrats call the ads illegal. Sens. Patty Murray and Chris Murphy wrote to DHS Secretary Mullin that the ads are "a shockingly corrupt misuse of taxpayer dollars." Legal experts have also pointed to federal limits on using appropriated money for "publicity or propaganda," and to restrictions on partisan political activity by government employees. That argument is real, and our readers should know it exists.

What Republicans Say

It is not only Democrats. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the ads "shouldn't be paid for with taxpayer dollars," and Sen. Thom Tillis compared them to the ads of Hungary's Viktor Orban. Sen. Katie Britt said any use of taxpayer dollars should be "done judiciously and in accordance with the law." Those are reported facts, and we are not going to bury them. The administration, for its part, has shown no sign of changing course.

Our Take

But look at who is doing the loudest screaming and what they are protesting. A president is putting a patriotic message on television, and the party that has spent years telling Americans what to think is suddenly worried about persuasion. Democrats will say taxpayers are being forced to fund political speech. But the administration's position is that these are public information spots, and whether the law agrees is a question for the lawyers, not a verdict for the cable panels that are already delivering one.

There is also a simple way out. Trump has said he will cover future costs with MAGA Inc., which held more than $400 million at the end of July. Asked whether the money already spent would be repaid, he said, "we'll decide." If he wants to end this fight, the answer is one wire transfer away.

Until then, expect the outrage to keep running right alongside the ads.
